Seeing the Whole Circuit

A processing plant is a chain of dependencies. A worn liner in the primary crusher changes the product size, which overloads the screens, which starves or floods the gravity circuit, which finally shows up as lost recovery in the concentrate. Technicians, in turn, add more value when they understand the process, not just the machine. A repair that restores a slurry pump to specification but ignores why the feed density keeps spiking will simply fail again. When technicians ask operators how the equipment behaved before it failed, they gather evidence no manual can provide. Planned maintenance works best when it is scheduled around production realities, and production runs best when maintenance windows are respected rather than negotiated away.

Own It Together: Shared Ownership in Practice

Shared ownership is not built by slogans. It is built through practical routines:

  • Joint shift handovers, where operators and technicians review equipment issues side by side.
  • Operator-led basic care, where trained operators handle cleaning, lubrication, and inspection, freeing technicians for complex work.
  • Team root cause analysis, involving both the person who ran the equipment and the person who repaired it.
  • Shared performance measures, such as availability and overall equipment effectiveness, so both teams win or lose together.

These routines echo proven approaches like Total Productive Maintenance, where reliability is everyone’s responsibility.

The Payoff

When operators and technicians think in systems, the results appear across the business. Unplanned downtime falls because problems are caught early. Maintenance costs drop as repeat failures are eliminated. Safety improves because fewer breakdowns mean fewer rushed, high-risk repairs. Most importantly, trust grows. Blame gives way to curiosity, and the plant becomes a place where people solve problems rather than defend territory.
